Assignment 2: Windows 7 Upgrade

On Thursday October 22, 2009 Microsoft launched its new operating system called Windows 7. Its key features are:
· Home Group (Shares files)
· Jump List
· Snap (resizes windows)
· Windows Live Essentials (7 programs to choose from)
· Window Search
· Window Taskbar (less cluttered )
· Full 64 bit Support
· More personal Desktop Themes
· Performance improvements (wakes up and shuts down faster)
· Play to Play Media on other PC’s
· Remote Media Streaming
· Windows Touch

Microsoft Windows XP’s key features are:
· Security
· Reliability
· Compatibility
· Performance
· Extensibility
· Portability
· International Support

Windows 7 has some unique features that Windows XP does not have. You can open programs and files you use most in just a click or two if you are using Windows 7. You can navigate lots of open windows more quickly and resize the open windows that you cannot do in Window XP. Windows 7 is designed for faster sleep and wake-up mode than the slow-to-wake-up mode of Windows XP. Windows 7 has Home Group that allows for easy share files among multiple PCs at home and it simplifies managing printers, cameras and other devices. A really nifty feature is the ability to touch and tap the screen with rather than point and click with a mouse using XP. You can also play or stream music, videos and photos around your house to other devices such as TVs or other computers. Windows 7 has more personalized desktop themes and gadgets than Windows X. Finally you can connect to music and photos on your home PC while away from home when using Windows 7.
XP can do the main things Windows 7 can do like communicate and share photos, emails and IM programs. You can browse the web easily with both systems, run lots of programs at once, and watch and record TV on your PC.

According to PC World magazine there are a few things one should be aware of before upgrading to Windows 7. You can’t upgrade directly from Windows XP to Windows 7. However, you can upgrade from Windows Vista. If you download a free version of Windows Vista for a 30-day trial period you can use it to migrate from Vista to Windows 7. They do state that it is always recommended that you do a clean install rather than this two-step migration. If you have an old printer and other equipment that you use with your computer you should use Windows 7 Upgrade Advisory Tool. Windows 7 also offers an Easy Transfer Tool to transfer all your data.

In three years Microsoft will debut create a new operating system called Windows 8 in 2012. I think this constant changing in software, operating systems and technology in general really keeps school technology programs on their toes. I am not sure at this time I would recommend an upgrade to Windows 7 operating system for two reasons. I am not sure that schools need to have the new and improved operating systems to teach the students the skills they need to teach them for the 21st Century Learning. I think Windows XP or Windows Vista will get the job done just as well. Most learners today are able to easily transfer skills from one system to another. They are used to figuring out how things work and many have access to new system upgrades at home. I think the changes in the operating system seem to be easily learned and Windows XP offers the basics of Windows to teach students and prepare them for the technology world.

Assignment 1 Post~ Personal Techonology Assessment

Overview of My Assessment Scores

THE ISTE NATIONAL EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY STANDARD AND PERFORMACE INDICATORS FOR TEACHER.

On November 6, 2009 I read the ISTE NETS and performance indicators for teachers. I feel comfortable with all the following performance indicators:
1. Facilitating and inspiring student learning and creativity. 1.A,1.B, 1.C

2. Designing and developing digital-age learning experiences and assessments. 2.A, 2.B, 2.C *2.D (*I need to do more)

3. Modeling digital–age work and learning. 3.A, 3.B, 3.C, 3.D

4. Promoting and modeling digital citizenship and responsibility. 4.A, 4.B, 4.C, 4.D

5. Engage in professional growth and leadership. 5.A, 5.B, 5.C, 6.D

I have participated in many professional development programs but I don’t perceive myself as a leader in this area. I assist co-workers when asked to do so but I have not done any formal training for others in this area.

Q. Do you have the Opportunity to implement these standards in your classroom?
Not really.
It is difficult to implement these standards in my classroom due to curriculum standards we have to teach. We are currently in trimesters and each core subject has a pacing guide to follow. We must be on the same page as other teachers teaching the same subject. I barely have enough time to cover the content material that is required by the state. Creative assignments that require high order thinking skills are very difficult for my special education students and require more time to complete. Because of the time constraints I am limited in this area. I wish I could incorporate more of these types of assignments in my classes because the students seem to enjoy them.

NETS FOR TEACHERS: ACHIEVEMENT RUBRIC
I completed my NETs hard copy. I fell between the categories of Proficient and Advance on most standards. I posted my scores on my EDU 5240 Wikispace.
Here is an overview of my scores:
Basic: 1B, 4A, 4B, 4C, *5C, 6B,
*Somewhat Proficient: 5C,
Proficient: 1A2, 1A3, 2B, 3A, 3D, 5A, 5B, 5D, 6A, 6C, *6D,
* Somewhat Advanced: 6D
Advanced 1A1, 2A, 2C, 2D, 2E, 3B, 3C, 6E

I found some difficulty in scoring myself because I knew some things in most areas but not necessarily all things. I know how to explore and find things in software programs. I know how to problem solve and work to figure things out. I need to work on my skills using Microsoft Excel and Access programs. I never use Access and hardly use Excel. I have taken basic courses and professional development for Microsoft programs but if you don’t use it you forget it. These programs are update regularly (like Word) and I have to learn how to use the new version. I am not experienced in creating PDF files and downloading videos from cameras, and creating DVD’s from that source. I have overcome the fear of using computers and have worked hard to learn new skills through professional development at RESA and online web seminars. Learn Port helped me complete hours I needed for highly qualified status. I completed 36 online classes in core subject areas. Listed below are the professional development classes I have taken.
Alpha Smart. -Teaching students to write using Alpha Smart. 6 Hours

Writer’s Training – Teaching students to use the Writer. 3 Hours

23 Things - Web 2.0 tools for classroom instruction. Blogs, Wikis, Google Docs. For writing. 20 Hours

Podcasting A- Z- How to use and create Podcasting for your curriculum. 6 Hours

PDF Acrobat Basics - How to create your materials in PDF files. 3 Hours

Introduction to Wikispaces Online webinar. 2 hours.

Wikispaces Education Webinar: Anthony Armstrong Speaks On His Class Wiki Online 2 Hours

Learn to Do More With Wikispaces Private Label Online 2 hours

A Beginner´s Guide to Computers and the Internet v1.1 Learn Port. 10 hours

I enrolled in a few technology courses to continue to improve my technology skills. They are:
Academy for the 21st Century Technology V1.1 30 Hours
Enhancing Your Curriculum Through the use of the Internet 35 Hours
Inquiry Based Learning Using Real Data Sets V1.1 20 Hours

On November 9, 2009 I took the NCRTEC online survey tool.
Because our school is running by Trimesters our time is limited to teach the state standards. We are all using subject pacing guides for all core classes and must adhere to the time frame that we developed for each core subject. Here are my scores on the learning with technology profile tool.

Indicators of Engaged Learning
VISION OF LEARNING = Medium
TASKS = Medium slightly more than Vision of Learning
ASSESSMENT = Medium slightly less than Tasks
INSTRUCTIONAL MODEL = Medium more than tasks
LEARNING CONTENT = Medium more than Instructional Content
GROUPING = Medium equal to Assessment and Student Role
TEACHER ROLES= Almost High closest one to high
STUDENT ROLES= Medium equal to Assessment and Instructional Content

Indicators of High-Performance Technology

ACCESS = Medium close to High same as Teacher Roles
OPERABILITY = Low
ORGANIZATION = Medium
ENGAGABILITY = Medium same as Learning Context
EASE OF USE = Medium same as Access
FUNCTIONALITY = Medium same as Engagability

My scores are not as high as I would like them to be in regards to students’ role in their learning process. Inquiry based instruction is something I think our high school needs to work on across the board. In my opinion No Child Left Behind has hindered students’ learning more than it has helped. Trimesters allow students to take more classes but they must learn as much information in a shorter period of time and students are not used to this type of rigorous learning style. I think Michigan schools are leaving lots of children behind and it is the fault of making teachers teach to a test instead of teaching students the importance of learning skills they will need for the future. I answered these questions based on my restrictions within the amount of curriculum I have to teach and the lessons plans the district/ departments has developed for us. My scores are based on that not necessarily on the way I would like to teach.

Skills I would like to develop.
I have worked hard to stay abreast on learning technology skills. I would like to learn more about how to create and use PDF files. I took an in-service training at RESA on PDF’s but didn’t learn much on how to create them. I don’t have the software to explore and use on my own. I also need to improve on video transfer from cameras and creating DVD’s.

Search for Technology Courses
On November 11, 2009 I signed up for Enhancing Your Curriculum Through the use of the Internet (35 hours). I completed it on November 13, 2009. I am currently taking another LearnPort online course called Academy for the 21st Century Technology B1.1 . Technology is always changing and because of this I will continue to explore and find ways to keep up with these changes so I can be a better tech savvy teacher.
